She was previously an aerobics instructor for Bally Total Fitness and a holds red belt in Tai Kwon Do. An avid fan of professional tennis and an active player, she has been a contributing writer for Tennis View magazine. Yoga can become an essential part of your life that will yield numerous mental, physical and emotional benefits. Power yoga seeks to increase strength, flexibility and balance through the use of breath-based movements.

Whatever your yoga experience or degree of flexibility, you can develop a power yoga practice that can play a key role in achieving your health and fitness goals. After you complete a class, you should feel that each part of your body has been worked out, stretched and strengthened, but more importantly–you should feel an enhanced sense of inner peace and well-being.

Yoga is one of the few workouts for both the body and the mind. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. For more information about American Power Yoga, go to www.americanpoweryoga.com.

Laura Bickford

I was so like so many other busy multitasking moms out there, overworked, stressed out, managing a household and a busy job with little time for rest or exercise. I would grab a fast food combo or convenience store doughnut for breakfast, toss down more processed food at lunch time, and make a large “comfort food” dinner to give me that evening carb overload I was craving. Top that off with a few beers and a late night snack a la Little Debbie and I inched my way up to 265lbs, a size 18, and truthfully I was completely miserable.

I was always tired, hypoglycemic, and developing high blood pressure. My bad knee and weight combined prevented me from feeling like I could be too physical (not that i really wanted too anyhow) I overate or ate processed food nearly every day and I was depressed. I knew I wanted a change but it took an engagement proposal to kick me into gear.

The idea of wearing a size 18 wedding dress was enough motivation to finally get some action out of me. I joined a gym and started working out 5 days a week. I was so out of shape it was hard at first but I had great support from the trainers on staff and really got a lot of progress out of the sessions I made time for.

Then I did a lot of research about nutrition and made over the way I ate, the pounds started falling off. I would get up early and squeeze in a workout before work, eat sensible and healthy throughout the day, and then take a long walk with my dogs in the evening, I stopped drinking and regained some control on my idea of what a portion was.

As my fitness improved so did my skin, hair, attitude and outlook on life, and I was shrinking! I was so proud when I was able to fit back into an old size 6 from my early 20′s. I started to feel like my true self again, like I had been trapped inside this other shell of a person and now I was free. My passion for fitness and desire to help others led me to pursue this as a re-direct in life and make a career change.

I am now a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine and am working on my degree in Physical Therapy. I am also HKC Kettlebell certified as well. I know that fitness has the power to transform, let me guide you on your journey, so you can meet your goals, get healthy, and have a success story too!
